Fungus Toenail Treatment

OTC antifungal ointments, creams and lotions may work quite well for fungal skin infections, but they are not recommended for nails simply because they are not an effective treatment for toenail fungus. They are applied to the nail topically, and they don't penetrate the thick nail to kill the fungus, which is protected in the nail bed below the nail.

Toenail fungus remedies range from surgical removal of infected nails to simple application of an everyday substance thought to have some antifungal properties. Many people search for a traditional treatment, or a natural product because the prescription drugs are very expensive, or because they have heard that the prescription drugs have unpleasant and dangerous side effects.

While an ingrown toenail itself is not a disease, it can certainly lead to a nail infection. Onychomyscosis is the most common type of nail infection and it accounts for about half of all nail disorders. The infections are particularly prominent in nails that are exposed to warm, moist environments like sweaty shoes or shower floors.

After a confirmed diagnosis, you may opt for prescription medications. Diflucan(R), Lamicil(R) and Sporanox(R) form a group of most used oral drugs to battle fungus toe nail infections. Once prescribed, they are easy to use. On the other hand, they do have side effects that may range from mild to severe. Close medical monitoring for drug toxicity must be in place.

There are literally endless "remedies" for treating toenail fungus. One of the most extreme is taking prescription medication. These drugs are not only very expensive but incredibly dangerous. Side effects of these drugs include liver disease and in severe cases death! On top of it they don't work half the time.

Another common way to get a toenail fungus infection is by cutting your nails too short. Don't feel bad the majority of people do. However, in the future make sure you avoid doing this. Cutting your nails too short can cause minor cuts on the skin leaving your toe open for increased chances of infection.

Some of the most ineffective treatments include over the counter pharmacy medications. These include tea tree oil, vick's vapor rub, and other topical ointments. These for the most part are ineffective alone at treating toenail fungus unless you have the most mildest of cases. Another ineffective treatment I found was the Listerine mouth wash soak.

Another common way to get a toenail fungus infection is by cutting your nails too short. Don't feel bad the majority of people do. However, in the future make sure you avoid doing this. It is much easier for your toe nails to become infected than it is for your finger nails, because your shoe causes your toes to sweat, therefor creating a moist and warm place for the fungus to live. It is harder for your immune system to fight against the infection because of the blood circulation is diminished because of the shoes you wear.

Ultimately you are going to need an antifungal treatment to get rid of your nail infection. Antifungal creams come in pills and topical treatments and either can be used as a home treatment of toenail fungus. Antifungal pills often offer a quicker more effective treatment but come with the chance of side effects.
